A dialog box appears in which you can select two parameters of the \multicolumn command: the number of columns for the multicolumn entry and the method of alignment (center, left-justified, right-justified).
If a block of text is selected, then it will be used as the third argument. Otherwise, the cursor is positioned where the third argument should be.
